Tales of Legendary Artifacts was our fourth installment of our storytelling events, and was present in Charlatos of 5117.

This night we had the pleasure of hearing from Brakian about Spike the War Rat and Fromer about his soulstone wand.

After hearing about the soulstone wand we went on a field trip to the Catacombs for a demonstration.

[Town Square, Garden Niche - 318]
This small niche between two buildings has been neatly landscaped into a tiny moonlit garden, its careful mosaic of flagstones interspersed with patches of trimmed grass.  A low stone bench rests along one vine-covered wall, and a patch of colorful violets surrounds a painted wooden barrel in one corner.  You also see the Hickok disk, a cracked soulstone, a dark-mantled figure, a bushy-tailed chipmunk, a rascally celestial spirit that is flying around, a diminutive fire elemental and a mistwood serving cart with some stuff on it.

Rovvigen recites softly:

"Thank you everyone for coming out tonight. We have the pleasure of hearing two guest speakers tonight during Tales of Legendary Artifacts."

Rovvigen recites softly:

"We have Master Fromer and Brakian who will be enlightening us about their artifacts and the back history behind them"

Rovvigen recites softly:

"Please sit back and enjoy the stories and refreshments we have provided"

Rovvigen recites softly:

"And with that I give you Sphere and Scythes very own Brakian"

Brakian quietly says, "I spent a great deal of time pondering what to speak about."

Brakian quietly says, "Some arcane artifact, stolen from Maelshyve and hidden away for millenia."

Brakian quietly says, "An artifact of history, associated with ancient empires."

Brakian quietly says, "There's a great deal of possibility."

Brakian quietly says, "As I was digging through my lockers, I saw those two things."

Brakian quietly says, "But, I decided to speak of something, or more accurately, someONE who I remember fondly from my early days n the Landing."

Brakian removes a stalwart toy war rat from in his basilisk skin belt.

Thondalar starts chortling.

Thondalar asks, "Spike?"

Berkana says, "Spike."
Talinvor nods once.
Louaryne grins.

Brakian quietly says, "Spike."

Brakian quietly says, "There are a lot of memorials to the war rat I've seen."

Brakian quietly says, "Toys, statues, and even a siegery miniature."

Brakian quietly says, "Not many remember, or where there, when he first appeared."

Brakian quietly says, "It wasn't until much later that Spike was revealed as a portion of an experiment by Devestior."

Brakian quietly says, "In the end, Spike warred against the Bregandians with us."

Brakian quietly says, "Possessed some people."

Brakian quietly says, "Swatted people around with his tail."

Brakian quietly says, "It was entertaining."

Brakian quietly says, "However.  There were a few things about Spike that happened prior to that."

Brakian quietly says, "When Spike first appeared, it was in the catacombs beneath the Landing."

Brakian quietly says, "In disguise, I suppose, reconnoitering for Devestior."

Brakian quietly says, "I'd imagine the Bregandians had their sights set on the Landing for some time before sending their own agents."

Brakian quietly says, "Otherwise, I doubt we'd have met Spike and Devestior when we did."

Brakian quietly says, "There were a handful of people hunting beneath the city, who found a particularly large rat."

Brakian quietly says, "They, of course, attacked it."

Brakian quietly says, "It easily avoided them, and even killed one of them, before eventually scurrying off."

Brakian quietly says, "The rat made many appearances for several weeks after."

Brakian quietly says, "It never spoke, but would usually wait until it was attacked, respond in kind and then leave."

Brakian quietly says, "I was, sadly, not there for Spike's very first appearances.  I did encounter him a couple of times later and attempted to communicate with him somehow, but to no avail."

Brakian quietly says, "One night, myself, Manzier, and Stillhawk were hunting near the Abandoned Inn."

Brakian quietly says, "Marikka may have been with us, but I can't recall."

Brakian quietly says, "Spike appeared and wandered around the hills, massacring trolls.  And orcs."

Brakian quietly says, "We followed around, irritated at first but then we just started searching the kills and trying to talk to the giant rat."

Brakian quietly says, "We eventually followed him into the tunnel beneath the inn.  He continued leading us around.  We figured he was trying to communicate with us somehow.  Or just wanted to show off, or something."

Brakian shrugs.

Brakian quietly says, "Eventually, after at least an hour of dedicated pursuit, we ended up in the crystal room.  We gave Spike some food."

Brakian quietly asks, "In those days, what adventurer worth his salt didn't carry a block of cheese and a smooth stone, neh?"

Brakian carefully places a cup of hot ginger tea on the ground.

Brakian rubs his glacial blue eyes.

Brakian quietly says, "He ate the cheese.  Passed on the stone."

Brakian quietly says, "Finally, the rat looked at all of us, obviously intelligent and obviously interesting in communicating."

Brakian quietly says, "When he spoke, it was simple.  He just said "good night" and scampered off."

Brakian quietly says, "It was the very first time anyone heard Spike speak."

Brakian quietly says, "A slightly anticlimactic ending, but..."

Brakian taps a stalwart toy war rat, which is in his left hand.

Brakian quietly says, "A fond memory, nonetheless."

Speaking to Brakian, Fromer says, "A great memory indeed."

Speaking softly to Brakian, Rovvigen says, "Thanks for sharing that story with us."

*Up next is Fromer*

Rovvigen recites softly:

"And next we have Master Fromer when he is ready"

Fromer inclines his head.

Fromer just opened a glowing soulstone band.

Fromer removes a hollow soulstone wand from in his soulstone band.

Fromer glances at a hollow soulstone wand and grins.

Speaking shrilly to Fromer, Flimbo exclaims, "You better come up with a talking rolton or something to top that last one!"

Fromer recites:

"Thank you all for coming this evening
I am pleased to share the story of this artifact with you all tonight
Tonight I will tell you the story of Amasalen"

Fromer bows.

Fromer indicates his soulstone wand with a smile.

Fromer recites:

"This hollow soulstone wand has a sordid history that is steeped in sacrifice and torture"

Fromer shifts his eyes to the soulstone wand in his hand.

Fromer recites:

"As you may already know,Amasalen is the patron of sacrifice and sadistic joy
The substance inside this wand are the fruits of his birth.
Allow me to share the visions from the loresong that this relic provides and why Amasalen is who he is..."

Fromer nods gravely.

Fromer recites:

"The scene opens with figures dressed in priestly robes walking around the perimeter of an emerald alter humming low chants
A white-haired, muscular elf with bronzed skin is suspended over the altar bare-chested."

Fromer grins wickedly.

Fromer recites:

"There is a procession around the elven man, whose body is held taught by leather straps running from the corners of the room. The elf's body has several deep cuts running through it, slowly dripping blood into soulstone canisters on the altar below.
A single golden key tattoo adorns his naked right breast."

Fromer recites:

"The acolytes are surrounding an altar with small dagger-pierced heart pendants and symbols of green serpants on their robes.
The white-haired elven man is looking lifeless and pale, his wounds now only trickling ever decreasing drops of blood into the soulstones below."

Fromer recites:

"The leather straps are drawn tighter, more painfully than before.
He mutters bitterly as his life drains, "Lorminstra, false prophet, you have forsaken me.""

A pained expression crosses Fromer's face.

Fromer recites:

"At the end of his utterance, a serpent suddenly appears at the center of the altar.
The acolytes look up in shock as the elven man's bindings come loose, destroying the makeshift prison.
His fragile lifeless body slowly floats to the center of the altar, where the serpent kisses him."

Fromer flashes an evil grin.  The tips of his veniom-tipped fangs are clearly visible, protruding from beneath his upper lip.  His eyes suddenly glow with a yellow hue.

Fromer recites:

"The elven man, now cloaked in a hooded robe, is exiting the temple where so much torture had been inflicted upon him.
He leaves behind a scene of massive death and carnage.
The blood within the soulstone canisters has turned an unnatural black, testament to the darkness that it presided over.
Not a single survivor is left amongst the once lively priests."

Fromer bites his lip.

Fromer recites:

"The man exits the shrine, which prompty collapses.
A green serpent slithers out through a crack in the rubble"

Fromer raises his fist defiantly.

Fromer recites:

"And that is the end of the tale the wand tells and the birth of Amasalen"

Fromer nods perfunctorily.

Rovvigen recites softly:

    "Thank you Master Fromer"

Mikalmas says, "You should show us how its used."

Mikalmas exclaims, "I think everyone here could take a rat!"

Flimbo shrilly exclaims, "That was a way more gross story than a talking rat, but even equally as interesting!"

Rovvigen cackles!

Fromer asks, "Any questions regarding this wand?"

Fromer glances at a hollow soulstone wand in his hand.

Alisaire asks, "How did you come by it?"

Speaking to Alisaire, Fromer says, "It came to me by happenstance. A good friend who deals in artifacts told me of its availability. I do know that it was originally sold at an Ebon Gate auction."

Mikalmas asks, "Um, this may be basic...but...what does it DO?"

Mikalmas grins.

Fromer grins at Mikalmas.

Speaking to Mikalmas, Fromer exclaims, "A good question indeed!"

Fromer says, "This wand augments the power of a necromancer."

Fromer says, "It allows one to preserve corpses and imbue them with power unknown."

Mikalmas raises an eyebrow in Fromer's direction.

Mikalmas asks, "Oh.  We need a corpse?"

Mikalmas rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Thondalar says, "The wand works on corpses...doesn't mean we need a corpse right now..."

Speaking to Mikalmas, Fromer says, "It only works on critters."

Mikalmas snaps his fingers.

Speaking to Fromer, Ysharra says, "Like those with the sorcerer's arts can do?  I saw an animated minotaur not long ago clean up the Slopes with a claidhmore the sorcerer had given him."

Mikalmas grins at Fromer.

Mikalmas exclaims, "Field trip!"

Mikalmas asks, "Who wants to see the Wand in action?"

Mikalmas says, "We're going to the catacombs."

Mikalmas says, "Giant Rats.  I should think anyone can survive if they wish to see the wand in action."

Mikalmas says, "Master Fromer is going to demonstrate the Wand."

*The Group joined Mikalmas and we headed down to the Catacombs*

Catacombs, Tunnel - 7498]
The trickle of water running along the floor disappears into a hole too small to wiggle through, however the tunnel itself continues onward.  As you look ahead, you see it twists in a new direction, but you cannot find an end to the long passage.  You also see a giant rat and a giant rat.

A blue ora buffet cart comes rolling slowly into the room and stops.

A swirling cloud of shadow forms around Alisaire's right hand as she prepares a spell...

Alisaire gestures at a giant rat.

A thorn-barbed dirge-vaon vine suddenly sprouts from the ground and begins to thrash about violently!
The dirge-vaon vine lashes out violently at a giant rat, dragging it to the ground!
   ... 20 points of damage!
Hard head twist sends jolts of pain up the neck!
   The giant rat is stunned!

Mikalmas says, "Your show."

Fromer traces a burning rune into the air, melding the spiritual and elemental powers by sheer force of will.

Fromer gestures at a giant rat.

  Warding failed!

A ragged wound rips open a giant rat's jugular, which begins spurting blood.

The giant rat twitches and dies.

A giant rat appears to recover some strength.

The dirge-vaon vine suddenly stops moving, drops to the ground, and dissolves away.

Fromer traces a burning rune into the air, melding the spiritual and elemental powers by sheer force of will.

Fromer gestures at a giant rat.

A void rips open in the area, directly above a giant rat!
Rather abrupt decompression causes a giant rat to explode!
Billions and billions of tiny rat bits shower everything.
  Quite severely dead.

A giant rat gasps for air and is stunned!

Everything in the room seemed to stay in place.  The void disappears without further incident.
Talinvor skillfully weaves another verse into his harmony, directing the sound of his voice at a giant rat.

The giant rat falls to the ground in a deep slumber.

Speaking to Alisaire, Ysharra asks, "You were ready.  Have it in for rodents tonight?"

Fromer traces a burning rune into the air, melding the spiritual and elemental powers by sheer force of will.

Fromer gestures at a giant rat.

A giant rat is awakened by Fromer's attack!

A void rips open in the area, directly above a giant rat!

  Quite severely dead.

Everything in the room seemed to stay in place.  The void disappears without further incident.

Fromer waves a hollow soulstone wand at a giant rat.

A bubbling black mist slithers forth from Fromer's wand and curls around a giant rat's body.  It dissolves upon contact with him and disappears.  The stench of decay begins to dissipate and the rat's decomposition slows noticeably.

A dark-mantled figure slowly scans the room, searching for threats.
Limorten nods in agreement.

A giant rat scampers in!

Fromer says, "So first, the wand preserve corpses."

Sweetsin ponders.

Fromer traces a burning rune into the air, melding the spiritual and elemental powers by sheer force of will.

Fromer gestures at a giant rat.

Mikalmas nods at Fromer.

Fromer says, "Observe that this rat has wounds."

Fromer traces a burning rune into the air, melding the spiritual and elemental powers by sheer force of will.

Fromer gestures at a giant rat.

Fromer intones deeply over a giant rat's body as slender glowing wisps gather around Fromer's body like a swarm of moths to a lantern.  After a few moments Fromer begins to take on a slight glow and the giant rat's body starts to show subtle signs of movement.  Finally, the glow surrounding Fromer envelops the body and flares brightly before fading out, revealing an upright animated giant rat.

Speaking to Ysharra, Fromer says, "And no, they are not undead, that would imply a soul is within it."

Speaking shrilly to an animated giant rat, Flimbo exclaims, "Tell a joke!"

Ysharra greets an animated giant rat.  Perhaps they're in cahoots!

Speaking softly to Fromer, Rovvigen says, "Thans for the demonstration."

Fromer says, "Now."

Fromer traces a burning rune into the air, melding the spiritual and elemental powers by sheer force of will.

Fromer gestures at a giant rat.

Ysharra says, "Hrm."

Fromer says, "The rat."

Leafiara starts chortling.

Fromer says, "Has wounds."

Fromer points his soulstone wand at an animated giant rat.

Misty black smoke gushes forth from Fromer's soulstone wand, carefully encircling an animated giant rat.  The pure white light radiating from Fromer's wand's soulstone shell melds with the misty black smoke, as if infusing it with some unknown power.  The rat shudders momentarily as its wounds begin to suture themselves.  After several painful groans, the rat begins to look healthier, although still quite dead.

Sweetsin glances nervously around the room.

Flimbo points at an animated giant rat.

Flimbo shrilly exclaims, "That counts as a word!"

Flimbo shrilly exclaims, "It's two stories about talking rats!"

An animated giant rat cocks its head, squeaking fiercely!

Flimbo lets out a cheer!

Fromer says, "The wand restores the rat to full health, except being dead of course."

An animated giant rat scampers back and forth while eyeing you.

Fromer says, "It wand also provides the animation renewed life."

Fromer says, "And with this wand an animate can last theoretically forever."

Rovvigen softly says, "Wow."

Fromer says, "The magic contained within is quite powerful indeed."
